Adequacy of Essential Fatty Acids in a Vegan Diet
Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are important nutrients especially for brain health and protection against depression, dementia and neurologic disorders. This study tested fatty acid levels in vegan subjects of various ages. Results showed that 64 percent had insufficiencies and that 27 percent had more severe deficiencies. These deficiencies were easily corrected with a low-dose vegan DHA/EPA supplement. This study concluded that due to a wide genetic variability in conversion of ALA to DHA un-supplemented vegans might place themselves at needless risk.
